New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 Makeup & Hair by NARS, Revlon, Redken, & TIGI

François Nars, Founder & Creative Director, NARS, created two bold beauty looks for the Marc Jacobs SS2014 runway show.

 "This is a summer look that's all about the eye. Most of the girls have a teal blue line, but some have a royal blue,  extending past both the inner and outer corner. The skin is very transparent for a flushed look."

  “The starting point of the inspiration was Frida Kahlo, but we didn’t want the makeup to be a literal interpretation. Instead, eyes are softly defined yet translucent; the lips are the focal point with a faded and diffused berry shade, complementing the collection.”
James Kaliardos, for NARS Cosmetics, created the look for the Rodarte SS’14 runway show.
Rodarte’s SS’14 makeup inspiration evolved from Los Angeles and its sleek and minimal lines.  The eye makeup is precise and striking, accenting the graphic lines of their collection.

Francelle Daly, for NARS Cosmetics, created the look for the 3.1 Phillip Lim SS’14 runway show.

 “This season, Phillip created sunglasses with a hologram effect and I wanted to recreate the same iridescent texture – paired with translucent skin, it's very ethereal. It's a healthy glow in a futuristic way – like a ‘future perfect’ day at the beach.”

"With its fresh spin on tribal motifs combined with luxe fabrics and intricate embellishments, the collection called for clean and polished makeup with a bit of playfulness. We added a hint of platinum shimmer and a strong, graphic black eyeliner. Keeping the look modern and updated, a nude lip complemented the athletic playfulness in the collection."      

"The inspiration for this season is a kind of Tribal Techno. It's taking tribal patterns and treating them in a monochromatic form: black, white, silver. Bringing them out of their element and making them a little bit more graphic, a little bit more computer generated."

Uzo, for NARS Cosmetics,  created the look for the Tanya Taylor SS’14 runway show.



 “The look is so refined and chic – beautiful, polished skin with luminous cheeks, and a matte nude lip. The key to this look is really a sculpted and defined brow to give an air of sophistication. It was important to create a look that balanced the color and prints in the collection.”


 “Spring 2014 is inspired by all things paint. Specifically, I was inspired by the mood of Caro Neiderer's work and the texture that comes from heavy acrylics layered on top of one another.”
“We got our hands dirty this season and explored the textures and sharpness that color can bring to fabric and volume. Our palette is bright and joyful with an emphasis on pinks, whites, and bright saturated pops of blue and marigold.”

It contrasts the color and finish of the opalescent-textured eye, and also references the era of the artist Eugene von Bruenchenhein, which was a source of inspiration for Shane and Chris. We loved the idea of translating this into the beauty look as well.”

Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, backstage at Rag & Bone, focused on clean luminous skin and paired it with a subtle eye, strong brow and bold lip, to compliment the Rag & Bone Spring/Summer ’14 collection.

“This look focuses on textures with a matte lip and luminous skin, but it's not about being sweet; she's still a cool rag & bone girl,” says Westman. “This is the first time rag & bone has ever done a lip look like this. We decided to go with a bold lip because it fit so well with the clothes this season. There is a lot of shine to the collection, as well as pastels, so I really wanted the lip to pop. The lip color was inspired by the World Cup in Brazil and the eye look was inspired by what your eyes might look like the morning after going to bed with your makeup on.”

To recreate the nail look worn by the models, celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi suggests creating a shape that’s slightly rounded and then applies a creamy polish to keep it simple.

“We wanted a soft color that would really complement the bold lip,” says Choi. “To guarantee a finished look, you should always use three coats, as it ensures that the polish will look perfectly opaque and smooth.”

Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, created a minimalistic, beach inspired look with an edgy twist and a pop of color for Assembly’s Spring/Summer ’14 collection.

“I wanted this look to represent a really sporty, cool girl,” said Westman. “I started with healthy looking skin and added a bit of a natural, bronzy glow then paired it with a matte pink lip, inspired by a girl whose just come from the beach with zink on her lips. Since all of the girls were sporting these really cool sunglasses, we kept the eyes bare and instead added a graphic hot pink stripe on one cheek. The look really complements the graphic look of the clothing and is super flattering on all of the girls.”
“I was really inspired by the metallic copper color used throughout the collection and definitely wanted to do something a bit graphic with nail look. I wanted it to be a bit tough and not too feminine,” says celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi. “To recreate the look, apply two coats of rose gold polish, then swipe the white across one section of the nail and finish with a thin curvy black line to separate the colors. It’s easy to do at home because you can really play with it and get creative with each nail.”

Revlon Global Artistic Director, Gucci Westman, pairs naturally luminous skin with a subtle brown eye and deep purple on the lips for the Marchesa Spring/Summer ’14 collection.

“Overall the inspiration is gothic romance. It adds toughness to the feminine and enchanting look of the dresses and it plays in well with the body art,” says Westman. “The clothes are so pretty and I wanted to do something to compliment the overall look, but still be unique and a little cheeky."

“We went with a lavender shade because it’s a cute and feminine color that really matches with everything. It works beautifully with the colors that the collection is made up of,” says celebrity manicurist Jin Soon Choi. “To recreate the look, carefully apply two coats of the lavender polish and then be sure to add a shiny top coat to finish it off. When applying any pastel the most important thing is to take your time so that the color looks even and smooth throughout.”

Redken Creative Consultant Guido muted the hair this season, in order to create a more homogenous runway look. The simplicity of the hair, which was pulled back into a low ponytail and finished with a basic black headband, emphasized cohesion over individuality. By minimizing the unique personalities of each model, Guido enabled Victoria Beckham to communicate her design aesthetic in a clear and concise manner. 

"Overall it's a very minimal aesthetic, a very clean and modern look for Victoria Beckham. She wanted the hair to emphasize uniformity on the runway, which is why I pulled the hair away from the face and secured it with a basic black headband. In a way, this look is modernly classic."

Redken Creative Consultant Guido fused glamour with grunge at the Alexander Wang show this season to create a nonchalant, yet sexy runway look. By adding thickening lotions and texturizers to the hair, Guido created volume without altering the model's natural texture with teasing or heat styling.



"Overall it's a very sexy look this season. I wanted the hair to reflect the cool, low-key Alexander Wang type girl. I suppose there are equal parts grunge and glamour, in that the hair is voluminous, yet natural."

Redken Creative Consultant Guido kept the hair soft and feminine this season with a simple, yet classic French braid at Diesel Black Gold. To soften the style, Guido loosened the hair around each model's face, making the look feel more romantic. The dampness of the braid introduces a beach-like element to the overall style, making the look more casual and accessible for the everyday woman.

"I wanted the hair to be simple and quite feminine for Diesel Black Gold. I love a simple braid, in that the style is both elegant and wearable for most women. For me, a braided look will always be fashionable."

Take very top section of hair and separate into three sections and begin French braiding, slightly twisting hair to give the braid a messy look 

Continue to braid downward, keeping the hair pulled tight 

Secure end of braid with an elastic and a piece of leather 

Mess up hairline a bit to soften the overall look. 



Redken Creative Consultant Guido took the models from day to night, creating an evening look that one might expect to see backstage at a rock concert. While the Redken styling products produced a heavier look and feel, Guido made sure to add some subtle movement back into the look by bending the hair over a curling iron.



"The look encompasses a grungy, cool girl style; however, she has a certain European sensibility to her. I felt the hair needed to be rock-and-roll chic, but in a nighttime way. Working with oil-based products and texturizers really helped to achieve that heavier, night time feel."

 Redken Creative Consultant Guido expanded upon the basic low pony by adding congruent, deep side parts to each model's hairline. Such clean lines, separated and smoothed with a fine-toothed comb, juxtapose the natural hair left to air dry below.



"It was important for the look to encompass visually interesting and modern elements; however, the overall direction needed to remain relatable.Yes, the look is simple, but what I really want you to take from this season is the wearability of the hair that is so prevalent in New York fashion."

Redken Creative Consultant Guido kept the hair free flowing and down this season to reinforce the ultra-glam style of the collection. To keep the look soft and light, Guido prepped the hair with satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion and finished with a drop of diamond oil shatterproof shine to add richness and shine to the ends.

"There was a departure this season from the tradition low-ponytail that one has come to expect at this show. This season, I wanted to incorporate the 60s style icons that have been so influential to Ralph Lauren throughout his fashion career. I supposed the best descriptors for the hair would be nonchalant glamour."

Redken Creative Consultant Guido brought the model's natural texture to the forefront of his style for Calvin Klein. He took a minimalistic approach to styling, allowing the hair to revert to its natural form. Other than a bit of all soft argan-6 oil to quell frizz and flyaways, the hair was au naturale!

"I kept the hair very natural for Calvin Klein. After adding extensions, I trimmed the hair to give it a nice, chic length. I wanted a clean, minimalistic look, so it was important that the hair wasn't overly long. By allowing the hair's natural texture to remain in tact, the overall style is a bit raw, yet elegant."

Redken Creative Consultant Guido aligned the hair this season with the youthful, carefree style of Marc's collection. Once the wigs were lightened, Guido's team went back and darkened the roots to replicate regrowth. From the color to the choppy, somewhat messy cut, this look screams youthful nonconformity at its best. 



"Why wigs? I suppose Marc and I really liked the uniformity that only wigs can create on the runway. This look was designed to encompass the type of free-spirited girl that Marc loves and ultimately designs for. She is somewhat punk and boyish, which is why the wig is bowl-shaped and asymmetrically cut around the face. It is almost as if she took the scissors to her own hair, completely confident and entirely in tune with her own personal style."

  Create the Look:
Apply guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam to dry hair from roots to ends and comb through until hair is completely saturated. 
Divide hair into two sections (top and bottom) in the back. Make three or four parts if hair is very thick. 
Clip the bottom section down and out of the way, and then using a finishing brush; start to brush the top section flat against the head, following the round of the head in one direction. Repeat this with each section making sure it's very clean and neat-looking when finished. 
Blow dry hair until completely dry. Apply control addict 28 high hold hairspray and then place wig cap on so it completely covers the head. 
Once the wig is secure, apply forceful 23 super strength finishing spray to add texture


Inspired by the life, times and characters of French novelist Francoise Sagan, the Ruffian
Spring Summer 2014 Collection focuses on the freshness and vulnerability of
youth. Dynamic oppositions are carried into application and use of both noble and
technological textiles. Classic silk cottons are paired with vulcanized canvas, while
English hand-quilted cotton is brought to life with digitally printed silk. Continuing with the
theme of vulnerability and youth, CATWALK® by TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick Irwin
worked hand in hand with the Ruffian team to develop an innocent, ingénue hair look.

How-To:
1. Prep the roots with CATWALK® by TIGI® Curlesque Strong Mousse

random sections using a curling wand and set the curl with a duck-bill clip

3. Once entire head is set, remove all clips and gently brush out curls to achieve the
desired shape

Mara Hoffman’s Spring Summer 2014 collection draws inspiration from color,
light, and happiness, embracing the rainbow for it’s positivity, diversity, and ultimately, for
serving as a symbol of light, love, and manifestation. The collection looks at different
cultures and cosmic spaces seen through a prism of colors. Both classic and new shapes
are brought to life with vibrant color palettes in chiffons, CDC’s and cottons, pushing this
season to be one of the brightest and boldest yet. Once again, Hoffman and CATWALK®
by TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick Irwin pair up to develop a unique braided look
that evokes the happiness and bold aesthetic seen throughout the collection.

Overall Look: Exaggerated and embellished braids

How-To:
1. Prep hair with ample CATWALK® by TIGI® Curlesque Strong Mousse, working it from
roots to ends and brushing through with a paddle brush while creating a defined
center part from hairline to nape

2. Starting with the left side of the head, gather hair and begin french braiding
directly behind the ear, securing the end with a small elastic. Repeat on the right
side. TIP: Use a bit of CATWALK® by TIGI® Session Series True Wax on tips of fingers
to keep bits from escaping the braid.

3. Next, using pre-braided wefts of hair, attach to each braid using elastic string –

4. Using a colorful woven belt, bind the two braids together in a small section at the
nape of the neck and pin in place, tucking away the ends

Drawing on the infamous fight between the Mods and Rockers at Brighton Beach in the
60's, Jonathan Simkhai cleverly blends two fashion conscious subcultures into a
harmonious spring/summer 2014 collection. Inspired by both the rivalry and the energy
and movement of the groups clashing on the day, the clothing is graphic and bold,
whilst remaining classic and tailored. CATWALK® by TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick
Irwin worked with Jonathan to develop a relatable yet aspirational and luxe look, further
drawing upon the juxtaposition of the inspired collection.

Stacey Bendet's Spring 2014 collection for alice + olivia was inspired by
what she refers to as the American Girl – carefree collegiate with a romantic twist.
Sitting at the crossroads of preppy-meets-pretty, the collection was built around
sophisticated neutrals accented by pops of pastel and plays on proportion. CATWALK®
by TIGI® Global Creative Director Nick Irwin carefully considered the quintessential alice
+ olivia girl when creating the complementary hair look - a perfectly simple chignon that
exuded a girlish yet sophisticated youth.

How-To:

1. Starting with a base of straight, dry hair, begin flat ironing small sections using the

2. Once hair is bone-straight, create a deep and defined side part over the left
eyebrow and carefully brush hair into a low ponytail at the nape – being careful
to smooth hair over (not behind!) the right ear. Secure with an elastic

When creating his Spring/Summer 2014 collection, Alon Livne drew inspiration
from the iconic Grace Jones, the many illustrations of Peter Sato and Samurai Soldier
costumes. Together, these three themes generated an androgynous colony of colorsaturated
looks marked by strong graphic lines and futuristic fluidity. When working
together to develop the final hair look, Alon and CATWALK® by TIGI® Global Creative
Director Nick Irwin landed on a bold braided look reminiscent of the collections fluid
construction and prints – extending the lines from the clothes to the scalp.

How-To:
1. Prep hair with CATWALK® by TIGI® Sleek Mystique Fast Fixx Style Prep to condition
and eliminate frizz2. Section hair in 5 even, vertical sections and reverse-french-braid each section
making sure to keep the braid as close to the scalp as possible. TIP: Use a bit of
CATWALK® by TIGI® Session Series True Wax on tips of fingers to keep the braids
clean and free of fly-aways3. Secure each braid with a small clear elastic and spray with CATWALK® by TIGI®
Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray to provide a vinyl look4. Once entire head is braided, gather and twist the bottom of the braids into a

 This season, The Blonds drew inspiration from their favorite in art, animation and pop
culture. Specifically referencing Tweety, Marilyn Monroe, Marie Antoinette, Madonna
and Jane Fonda. The Blonds found inspiration in “The Original Blonde”, Tweety Bird. He is
definitely a “Blond” with his unpredictable sense of humor and big blue eyes full of
mystique framed by those signature fabulous eyelashes. Tweety’s vibrant colors and fun
personality embody the feelings for the season. The hair is the main accessory this
season, which was inspired by Tweety's head and Marie Antoinettes high hair, that
sometimes featured live birds.

How-To:
