What used to be yesterday's gossip is now, today's history. This is what veteran, highly-esteemed stylist and costume designer, Arianne Phillips did, chatting and discussing her back history on ground-breaking "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."
Sure, it bombed when first released twenty years ago but built a template for today's cross-gender blenders and gender-busters.
Always working and always hustling, Arianne heard about Hedwig while being drawn out by the first "Charlie's Angels." The constant re-writes of the same ole story and the drama worn her out. The same one-shoulder top Arianne fitted on Cameron Diaz was the same one she costumed John Cameron Mitchell in "Hedwig."
Knowing it's a low-budget indie, Arianne snuck away her "Charlie's Angels" wardrobe over to Hedwig, where help is needed the most.
Even that wasn't enough to portray Hedwig and her journey.
There was a lot of thrift shopping then chopping.
It helps to be a LA fashionista/hipster insider. She had Grey Ant to design an haute couture top for the music festival scene.
She worked with Hedwig's hair stylist and makeup artist to design, construct, and maintain the infamous Wig Swing Dress in the trailer park scene.
Arianne sensed Hedwig will be a cultural impact and influence, that it'll be historical.
For the longest time, she shuffled the entire Hedwig wardrobe from house to house. Until, she discovered a permanent home for it, at the Academy of Motion Pictures Museum.
Just you wait.
