Emmy 2015 Beauty, Aspirational, Approachable, & Affordable.

By Laura Medina

Intimate, Behind the Scenes of Kerry Washington getting ready with Neutrogena.

We all may be in awe, perhaps even envious, of last night's Emmy 2015 red carpet and award show.

However, when this scribe once learned the actual makeup, skin and hair care used on these actresses, these makeup and hair care are pretty, darn-right affordable and easy to find...unlike those haute couture gowns fresh off New York Fashion Week runways a mere two days ago.  So, that's why A-List actresses and actors are always front row.  They really do need it and wear those gowns for award shows.  With the exception of the Grammys, black-tie is de rigueur dress codes for these award shows in the land of casual hip tanks and jeans and flip flops.  The Emmy Awards is the Oscar of television.

Everybody's "power lady," Kerry Washington got ready the afternoon, before stepping on the red carpet, with Neutrogena.

Neutrogena, and Kerry's makeup artist, Carola Gonzalez and hair stylist, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew, and Kerry herself, were kind enough to take us behind-the-scenes in how they got Kerry red carpet ready with Neutrogena items that anyone can find, buy, and use.

Here is the entire Neutrogena lay-out for Kerry Washington's Emmy 2015 red carpet makeup to go with her fresh-of-the catwalk Marc Jacob Disco Collection Mirrored Gown.

Alright, this is Kerry's "Cinderella" moment with her fairy godmothers.

Makeup – Artist Carola Gonzalez

Inspiration:
“My inspiration for this look came about Marc Jacobs’ sequined dress. It reminded me of a modern day, fashion forward, upscale, flapper dress from the 20’s. It’s intricate detail called for simplicity. So, I decided to keep the makeup to a bare minimum, especially on the eyes, with a medium deep lip, to create a bit of contrast. I wanted to accentuate the shape of Kerry’s beautiful eyes without interfering or taking away from the dress. I wanted to highlight Kerry’s beauty in the most effortless and natural manner.”

Product Overview:
·       Neutrogena (Skin Prep): Hydro Boost Water Gel and Neutrogena Shine Control Primer
·       Blush: Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blends 30 Sunkissed. Layered with Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Blush in Bronzed.
·       Eyes: Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Eye Shadow Cocoa Mauve #40
·       Eyeliner: Neutrogena Nourishing Eyeliner Cosmic Black
·       Mascara: Neutrogena Healthy Volume Carbon Black

Breakdown:
To prep Kerry's skin and achieve her flawless glow, I always start by applying Neutrogena's Hydro Boost Water Gel, one of Kerry’s favorites, to add proper hydration. I then layer it with Shine Control primer to prevent shine on the skin. After a few minutes, when it’s fully absorbed, I follow with applying the foundation, Marc Jacobs Genius Gel Foundation in Cocoa Light, all over Kerry's face to even out skin and conceal any imperfections. For a sheer application use a wet wedge or Beauty Blender, for more coverage use it dry.

I then applied Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Blends in 30 Sunkissed, and layered it with Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Blush in Bronzed to create the perfect shade for this specific look. I brushed Kerry's eyebrows and filled them in with Kevyn Aucoin's Precision Brow Pencil in Brunette. I didn’t want her eyebrows to be very dark so I went with a shade a bit lighter than her own shade.

For the eyes, I used Neutrogena’s Long Wear Eyeshadow Cocoa Mauve #40 Palette. I first applied eyeshadow #3 all over Kerry’s eyelids, to almost match her own skin tone, and blended on crease. I used this shade to keep eyes to a bare minimum, since I wanted to keep the eyes clean and simple. To brighten the inner corner of the eyes, I applied, with a pointed brush, eyeshadow #2, and finished by applying eyeshadow #4 to the lower lash line, right under the lashes. I proceeded to lining Kerry’s upper lash line, right where the lashes connect with the skin, with Neutrogena’s Nourishing Eye Liner in Cosmic Black, and diffused it with a flat brush to soften the liner. I then applied a few coats on top lashes with Neutrogena's Healthy Volume in Carbon Black mascara to add lots and lots of volume, and two coats on the lower lashes. I really like this mascara cause it adds the right amount of volume and you can build the lashes without clumps. The upper lashes are the ones that make the eyes stand out the most, so always add a few extra coats, more than the bottom ones.

For the lips: I softly lined Kerry’s lips with Chanel Precision Lip Definer - Rouge Noir and blended with Neutrogena’s MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Rich Raisin. I blotted the lips and then re-applied RichRaisin, blotted again to set and create a satin finish.

Hair – Stylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew

Inspiration:
“From the moment I saw Kerry's Marc Jacobs dress for the Emmys I instantly thought period, with a very modern twist of a roaring 20's. However, the dress has a lot of details in it, so I didn't want to do something that was over powering when it came to her hair because the dress says it all. My inspiration was a simple, yet period hairstyle so I gave her soft sexy waves. Simplicity is everything, so if anyone can pull it off that is Kerry!”

Being that Kerry has so many events my main goal is to keep her hair healthy and with the Neutrogena products you can see the results.

Product Overview:
The Go to Products:
Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo
Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask
Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream

Tools:
Super Solano Blow dryer
Professional black comb attachment
Babyliss Pro thin Flat Iron
Hot tools Marcel Curling Iron (1 inch)
Large black matte bobbi pins

Breakdown:
To get Kerry's soft sexy waves i shampooed her hair with Neutrogena the Anti-Residue Shampoo which instantly removes heavy dulling and residue off of the hair. It was really important that I used Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Mask to condition her hair because it is an intensive moisture treatment which restores shine and leaves the hair so soft and lustrous. After I rinsed the conditioner out thoroughly, I toweled dried her hair. Secondly, I put in a dime size of the Neutrogena Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream to her damp hair. I rubbed it through Kerry'shair evenly by starting at the roots and working my way to the ends. This will keep her hair soft all day without any fly away strands or frizz and the shine is unbelievable as you can see.

Now the styling begins, I blow dried her hair with a comb attachment on high to smooth out all of her strands. Then I parted her hair down the middle into two sections and took large pieces of her hair and flat ironed it. Finally to create her simple, natural, effortless, soft sexy wave I parted her hair on the right side because I wanted the hair fall over her left eye. Then I used my 1inch hot tools curling iron and wrapped medium strands of the hair starting at the root loosely around the curling iron for 5 seconds. I did this clock and counter clock wise with the iron throughout her hair to pump up the curls into a wavy style. Then I pinned her hair under to shorten her length with my large size matte black Bobbi pins. Lastly, I finalized her simple sexy waves with my fingers.

 Takisha Hair Tips:
When trying to achieve this look, you have to always start with a great quality shampoo and conditioner. But nothing that's going to weigh the hair down. I don't believe in putting a lot product in the hair meaning sprays and gels. I love for the hair to move and have a lot of natural body with an amazing shine. If you're trying to create this look at home, the secret to this hairstyle is sexy waves works best on medium length hair.

Makeup Artist, Toby Fleischman, created the ultimate lip and flawless skin for Emmy-nominated actress, Ariel Winter - see below how she created them by using Burt's Bees
THE LIP: She and her team were all undecided as to whether they go with a red lip to match the red gown or keep everything simple and clean.
THE SKIN:

Avon Global Celebrity Makeup Artist Lauren Andersen worked with Scream Queens star Emma Roberts for tonight's Emmy Awards. Below is how to get the look from Lauren.

Lauren's Inspiration: Art Deco elegance.

Face: I started by prepping Emma's skin with Honest Beauty Everything Primer and added Hourglass Dim Light Powder to the cheeks.

Eyes: To give Emma a soft smoky eye, I used the Avon True Color Eye Shadow Quad in Berry Love. I applied the light pink shade in the crease, the bronze shade under the eyes and used a brush with the burgundy shade as an eyeliner. I finished with a few coats of Avon SuperExtend Winged Out Mascara in Black.

Lip: I wanted to keep Emma's lip soft and natural so I used the Avon Ultra Color Indulgence Lip Color in Honey Flower.

Nikki Lee from NINE ZERO ONE salon styled Emma Roberts' sultry side swept curls for the 2015 Emmy Awards. This modern take on old Hollywood hair perfectly complimented Emma's pale pink gown and vintage jewels. Below Nikki shares her steps on how to get the look.

Steps:
1.     Prep hair with Unite 7 Seconds Leave in Detangler, then Unite Boosta Spray at the root to mid shaft for volume.
2.     Using Unite Blow and Set Lotion for ends, blow out ends with 2" round brush which adds a nice bounce and set hair by spraying 7 Seconds Glossing Dry Thermal Shine for protection against heat.
3.     Take 2" sections all around wrapping the hair downward and pinning it with a duck bill clip to hold into place. Once completed do a light mist of Unite Max Control Spray and let the hair cool for about 15 minutes.
4.     Once cooled, take the pins out and begin brushing all curls out with a boar bristle brush. This is a key element to creating that old Hollywood wave.
5.     After brushing out and creating the shape, lock it in to place with Unite Session Max Hairspray.

JON HAMM'S EMMY HAIR - HIS WINNING LOOK MISTER POMPADOUR PEPPERMINT POMADE

There's no denying Jon Hamm has great hair- and at the 2015 Emmys- he and his hair- looked as dapper as ever. Celebrity stylist Diana Schmidtke who styled Jon for the Emmys' divulges her secret to achieving his Emmy night hair- Mister Pompadour's Peppermint Pomade.

The water-based pomade is made for hairstyles that demand a balance of medium hold with a touch of high shine. The sweet scent of peppermint accompanies the performance and provides a pleasant aroma. Made from all natural ingredients and without parabens or sodium chloride.

Key ingredients include:
  • Aloe Leaf juice saturated with essential vitamins and minerals that help heal scalp, add sheen, luster and shine while fighting frizz and restoring hair to proper health.
  • Panthenol - Form of Vitamin B5 that penetrates through the cuticle of the hair and acts as a powerful humectant that helps hair maintain moisture, leaving it more pliable, shinier, stronger and thicker.
  • Hydrolyzed Soy Protein - Hair conditioning, strengthening, and repairing.
To get the look according to his stylist Diana Schmidtke: Start with wet hair. Using a blowdryer, blow dry the hair up and away from the face with your finger tips to create natural volume in the front. In the back, direct the airflow from the blow dryer downward to lay the hair flat. On the sides, direct the airflow from front to back on both sides to lay the side hairs flat. Upon completion of blow-drying your hair completely dry, take a nickel size amount of Mister Pompadour's Peppermint Pomade. Be sure to distribute the product evenly through your palms and fingertips. Starting in the front, fingers spread apart and slightly in the shape of a "claw" move your fingertips from front to back separating the hair giving it a natural appearance. Finish with a light dusting of hair spray to keep your style perfect all night.

And to get his cut- ask your stylist for longer on top, shorter on sides and back. No extremes, no disconnects. Jon's hair is classic and timeless. Mister Pompadour's Peppermint Pomade is $17.50 Available at www.misterpompadour.com

THE LOOK: Modern elegance.

INSPIRATION: John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh gave Taylor an elegant, voluminous look for tonight’s EMMYS, “Taylor's dress has a bohemian Grecian vibe and strong color so we thought it would be cool to take something classic and make it more modern - the volume on the sides gives a contemporary pyramid shape and the relaxed waves evoke glamour,” he says.

·         To begin, Harry applied John Frieda Luxurious Volume Volume Building Mousse on towel dried hair for maximum volume and width.
·         Then, Harry loosely blow dried sections of her hair with a round brush.

The best part of the Emmy Awards isn't the award show itself but the pre-Emmy parties getting everyone all warmed up and charged up for the big night.

During the day of "Emmy Weekend," the town is bursting with style suites, offering every fashion emergency tools and kits and good luck charms and jewelry for that big night.

Some of these upscale style suites align themselves with charities, such as Debbie Durkins' Eco Luxe "Christmas in September" Style Suite where celebrities donate to the Shriner's Children Hospital while they get stuff that they need.

Elliot Gould showed his love for animals at "Christmas in September" charity gifting suite.

Kevin Szarbo & daughter and Khandi Alexander posing with what they need, Chariot Travelware Rolling Suitcase.

The most popular item is what busy and hot entertainment industry people need...uniquely, elaborately designed, rolling Chariot Travelware Luggage.

Those rolling Chariot Suitcases are ideal for A-Listers getting their runway gowns directly from New York Fashion Week.  Make-up and Hair Stylists love it for hauling their equipments.  This jet-setting scribe has immediate use for it as soon as she hits the road and the plane.  The best stuff is the practical and cute a mile away.

http://www.foreverrakhi.com/, Forever Rakhi Good Luck Charms.

The A-List nominees and winners are normal people like everyone else but they're under a lot of pressure to "make it or break it" who worked long and hard and sacrifices to get where they are.

These very affordable Forever Rakhi charm bracelets were a big hit at Charmaine Blake's Emmy Gifting Suite.  The most expensive charm is $25 and most are under that, hovering around $18.

The Tusk charm brings: good fortune, recognition, and gratification.

The Evil Eye protects you against haters, brings luck, and sanctuary.

The OM charm is appropriate for awards, because you earned wisdom and knowledge while winning that award brings prestige.

January Jones, lucky in green and Tiffany.

Actress January Jones stunned in Tiffany & Co. jewelry on the red carpet of the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles last night.

Jones coupled her chic ensemble with a Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger Paris Flames brooch in 18k gold and platinum with diamonds ($15,000), Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Pavé X ring in gold with green enamel and diamonds ($5,750) and Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Pavé X ring in 18k gold with diamonds ($5,750).

Okay, the gorgeous clothes and some of the jewelry may be dream-worthy but the skincare, the makeup, and the hairstyling products are within reach.

Do what these winners and nominees did and make it happen with what you got and what you have on hand with Neutrogena, Avon, and Burt's Bees.
