Father Figure or a Wingman of Male Grooming, Pirooz Sarshar Tells It Like It Is.

By Laura Medina

A "Guy's Guy" groomed in the grooming business since he was a wee nine years-old lad, Pirooz Sarshar makes it his mission to be a father-figure to boys, a big brother to young men, and a wingman for fellow dudes confused and befuddled by male grooming products while reviving the lost art of a proper shave and how to behave like a real man, in honor of "Movember," Men's Health Month.

“I am in the business of coaching men in how to feel comfortable and more attractive about themselves, help them in their confidence, try them to do stuff they normally would not do.  So, I make them feel comfortable about taking care of themselves, washing their face or cooking a steak…whatever it may be. ”

Growing up in the beauty and grooming business, he is dismayed by the lost art of a proper shave, the booming confusion over male grooming products, and the lack of knowledge of what, which, and how...

“But, grooming is how I started; and I started in grooming fifteen years ago.  I started as a kid.  I was influenced as a kid.  I grew up in the business; and I always wanted to create something for men because I feel like there is a missing void; and no one was helping out the guys out there. If there were helping out guys, there was no education, basically.  They either learn from their mom and dad or a father figure or what their wife bought them.  I thought it was time to take a different approach.  It’s time to give men an outlet where they can come to and learn all these skills.  You know, once you gain a man’s trust, there is no limit to where you can go with him.”

He’s trying to get rid off the “metrosexual” stigma out of male grooming.

“The term “metrosexual” was created by a British writer many, many years ago.  You have “metrosexual,” “ubersexual,” “whatever-sexual,”.  The way I look at the overall men’s business, I really don’t care what type of sexual you are, it’s all about guys.  It doesn’t matter what color you are.  It doesn’t matter what background you are.  At the end of the day, we’re all men; and as my book is called, “It’s Not Easy Being a Man,”…Basically, we’re men with the same issues.  We all have to get up every morning, around the world and shave.”

Whether it's the NASCAR Good ole Boy, the Hollywood Producer, or the Wall St. Broker, some guys may have more variety of stuff and services available to them than others but they all share the same amount of confusion and lack of knowledge when it comes to today's male grooming and hygiene.  Ironically, it's the NASCAR Good ole Boy who seeks out Pirooz for help.

“We’re sort of been forgotten about.  We’re always been looked at as a niche but we’re the other half of the population..; and there’s always things out there for women, lot of choices out there.  A lot of areas for women to tap into, to help them out to sort out these things,…it’s acceptable for women to take care of themselves.  But in the US especially, grooming or actually having some sort of enhancement in your life as a man is always looked at as taboo.”

He's deeply concerned about the next generation coming up, even more confused than ever when it comes with a new set of male grooming challenges...

"People forget what we’re talking about is the basics in hair care, skincare, body care but in ten to twenty years, everybody is gonna look different.  We’re all gonna be mixed.  We’re already are. This brings new challenges to teaching and revamping male grooming fundamentals which means new breed of products and new approaches in how , where, and when to use them.  What’s really shocking, these marketers and cosmetics executives have to grasp these demographic changes.  It’s all global now; and I believe products should address these skincare issues across the spectrum because they’re coming up on the horizon."

Pirooz's biggest point of pride is when he teaches then passes on the knowledge of male grooming onto the next generation...

“My goal is to teach them the basics.  My goal is to inspire them to feel good about being a man.  With a lot of content that I write, I always look at this as, ‘Hey, if I can get a guy to take one extra step or if I can teach one thing out of many things out there, I’ve done my job.  Because, that one thing, per a step, is that thing that can help them alleviate of those discomforts he has…getting over those taboos.  It’s like anything else.  I have an eight or nine-year old nephew.  I remembered telling my sister when he was seven years-old, ‘I’m gonna teach him how to put gel, pomade, in his hair and look…it makes him look good.  As a boy, he will only going want to look better.  You’re not gonna want to look back to what you were…Here you are, watching this six or seven years-old boy putting products in his hair, watching him enhance his look, this is a very normal thing, for all guys, but there’s no one there to help them currently.”

“What I’ve done in the past, which I’m proud of, is teach young men how to groom and look good.  This isn’t done to sell face wash or shaving cream, the purpose to look and feel better about themselves. When they do go to an interview or when they are on a date and when they walk into a room,  they know they can capture people.  They know they have momentum.  They know they have power.  I think it’s very important.  These things are very important to a man.  When you take the average man, you think what he thinks about, stress, crap at work, people nagging him, people pulling at him in all different directions…how many people you know take the time to step out and look at themselves outside-in?  That’s our goal,  to help guys step out and realize the gift they have.”

"Taking something simple then turning it into something complicated, these big companies are turning grooming into brain surgery. Let’s focus on the fundamentals then work our way up.  People forget the basics.”

“Think about the concept of manicuring,…it’s a basic step towards hygiene; and it’s a basic grooming skill, getting clean.  If you teach a man that the first thing people notice are your hands and the first thing a woman notices about a man is his hands and you gain his trust, he will do it over and over again.  Again, if you teach those guys and they see results, it will go a long way.  It gotta easy.  It gotta simple. “idiot-proof”

Pirooz breaks it down in training men male grooming and hygiene practices, "Repetition represents skills for men"...

  1. Be honest
  2. Be Direct
  3. Be Relatable.
  4.       Be Fun
     5.  Don't Make Him or Them Feel Dumb.

The reverse of “Mad Men” back then, Mad Men used to talk down to women consumers in female products.  Now, it is the advertisers talking down to men in male products.

“I’m an educator. At the end of the day, I’m here to teach. By teaching men the right way, that’s the way the game is played. That’s the way to win men, to help men to win the game of life.”

To boys and a younger generation, Pirooz is a father-figure or a big brother.  To guys, his own age and older, he views himself as a wingman, helping men score.

Now, isn't that the point of "Movember," to help a guy win the game of life and help him score.

Kate Bosworth for TopShop & Eva Mendes for NY & Co. at Lucky FABB NY 2013 Edition

By Laura Medina

Eva Mendes for NY & Co., left. Kate Bosworth for TopShop, right.

Have you ever wondered what happened to Kate Bosworth?

Well, she got married and added a new profession onto her existing acting career, designer for TopShop.

She has an active hand in this fall's TopShop Collection.  She made the effort, from moving to London, learning and working with TopShop team, and conducting fabric, pattern, and style research.  She put a lot of emphasis on laser-cut suede trims and those leather pants in red, white, black, and metallic.

She and her husband even shot TopShop's ad campaign where they paid homage to the movie, "The Fabulous Baker Boys," a two and a half tv ad done in two weeks.  She saw this all the way through.

During her Question-&-Answer session during Lucky FABB NY, Kate said she has fashion design and retail in her blood.  Her dad and grandfather worked in retail.  She remember her dad showing her a fabric swatch then asking her what she thinks of it, so working with TopShop on a capsule collection is natural for her.

As for jealous people, a.k.a. "haters" and criticism as an actress and/or designer, Kate said that is of a moment and let it pass.

Why TopShop?  Whenever she's in London, she has to shop at TopShop because they have "of-the-moment" pieces at reasonable prices.  She thinks it's an honor to be working with them.

Reflecting on her additional role as wife and designer...

At first, she was hesitant about Vogue profiling her wedding but later, she is glad they did.  It's a family heirloom to look back on.  Kate was even more grateful that Valentino designed her gown since he is so used to calming down many a nervous brides before and after her.

When it comes to trendspotting,  nothing beats Paris for her.  Kate loves nothing more than to stand back and watch Parisian women strut by, noting how they know their scarves and style their outfits.

Kate Bosworth isn't the only actress-slash-designer at Lucky FABB NY.

In between juggling acting gigs, Eva also debut her NY & Co. Fall Collection along side Kate's TopShop Fall Collection.

When approached to help design a collection, Eva snatch every favorite piece out of her own closest then dumped everything on the table in the NY & Co.'s offices, showing them how these items inspire a collection for her.

They notice everything is vintage; and Eva said, with pride, that all her vintage pieces are from the thrift store.  As Lucky Magazine's October covergirl, she wasn't afraid to whip out a vintage belt she was wearing to show off a $3.99 price tag to the writer.

For vintage pieces that quite doesn't fit right off the rack, she takes them to a tailor to be altered.

Her designing process...you have to talk and listen to women.

Acting is suggestive.  Designing clothes is more objective.  Like Kate Bosworth, it has to fit.

"You need to focus on what women need.   You really need to start on the drawing board.  I’m really excited about my Spring Collection.  Using people’s postings, I’m making my collection better and better."

"The current Fall Collection has beautiful pastel colors.  Everyone at Lucky Magazine office loves that pink coat."

"For her upcoming Spring Collection, I love floral.  I’m happy wearing a floral pattern, something so feminine."

Even her traveling wardrobe is vintage, a large scarf will do.  On stage, she burrowed a very large scarf from the audience then twisted and knotted a turban then a headband.

For such a vintage fan, people are surprise to hear her favorite style idol is Vanessa Paradis because she can wear vintage without being a character in costume or stuck as a retro pasquinade.

As a large-footed, Cuban woman who has been joked that she can sleep standing, Eva prefer heels.  For her, it makes her legs look sexy and feminine. But, a woman has to be comfortable first and foremost, or else, it wouldn't work; and it's not worth the torture.

Now, you know what your favorite actresses are up...fashion designer.

Christmas Tale of Two Cities, Glendale Galleria & London; Lance Bass brings sparkle at Vanguard Awards; and Sharon Jones & the Dap Tones in Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.

By Laura Medina

The Holiday Season or exactly, Christmas Season, has become a three-ring circus.  A cheery cross-cultural, cross-continental celebration of Christmas happened concurrently at the same time in two different shopping districts in two different cities, Glendale, California and Regent Street in London.

Of course, a good eight hours ahead, London's Christmas Tree Lighting went ahead on it's top shopping street, Regent Street, to officially start the Christmas Season, a good month ahead of the usual American Christmas shopping.

For American actor, Ty Burrell of ABC's "Modern Family" and American director of DreamWorks Animation film "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," Rob Minkoff, this was a special treat for them, a pair of Yanks helping launch Merry Ole Christmas in the heart of London.

This is today's London.  Today's top British singers, Leona Lewis and the beloved Sporty Spice (Mel C.) and Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) gave an holiday concert then this cross-cultural group of Americans and Brits, all together, push the button to launch Christmas in London.  First, fireworks blasted then a series of ring street lamps spread up Regent Street, starting the English Holiday Season.

Once London's Christmas celebration was finished, it was early morning fresh start for the Glendale Galleria with locals lining up, first thing on a Saturday California morning, for Kyle and Kendal Kardashian at the PacSun shop then a special performance for all the Glendale Galleria shoppers...

A pair Christmas elves on stilts pirouetted and high kicked for the curious crowd, waking them out of their morning blurriness.

The extravaganza warmed up with an angelic aerialist twisting and turning in a loop.

Folks ooohed and awwwed when an unassuming juggler hopped on a hoop then did handstand on it but....

the real magic happened when a third acrobat join the juggler and the aerialist for a Cirque du Soliel-sque acrobatics of human chairs and ladders.  Even, the stilt walkers were gasping.

Eventually, Santa has to appear to official start the Christmas Season in Glendale.  It didn't stop there...

Another pair of stilt walkers greeted shoppers and families at the main entrance.

The day finished into a raucous choir of street drummers to jazz up shoppers into the night.
If you want to learn more about these performers, go to http://karlarossproductions.com/

When the celebrations faded away into the night at the Glendale Galleria, things were just warming up at the Vanguard Awards, providing holiday wattage from the likes of Lance Bass, Taryn Manning, Dan Bucatinsky, and the cast of "Orange is the New Black."

Amid the Christmas spectacle, one cannot forget the All-American holiday, Thanksgiving.

Retro/Neo-Soul, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are going to perform on a Float in the 87th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

For Sharon, "In looking forward to performing on Thanksgiving, Sharon Jones recollected, “Getting to take part in this parade is so thrilling; I’ve been watching it on television since I was a young girl.” She added, “I have traveled a hard road this year and being thankful is something I relate to deeply,” says Jones."

This is their way of giving folks a "taste" of their upcoming release,  "Give The People What They Want" out January 14 on Daptone Records; and almost a month later, they'll start their nation wide tour at New York’s Beacon Theatre on February 6.

Movember, Male Grooming, "Straight Up. No Chasers"

By Laura Medina

Rock & Brews' Movember “Shave the Date”, left.  Michael Elliot's Hammer & Nails Shop, right.

There's more to November than turkey and gluttony.

Ladies first, they have Breast Cancer Awareness Month last month, October (by the way, men also suffer and die from breast cancer).

This month is Movember, Men's Prostate and Testicular Awareness Month which morphed into the generalized but no less Men's Health Awareness Month.

Part of Men's Health Awareness Month is telling men that male hygiene is an easy and essential part of men's health.

The ultimate guy's guys, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, of KISS, beat everyone to the chase by doing a "Shave the Date" Movember fundraiser, basically a good ole fashion shave-a-thon at their super cool and chill rock-themed restaurant, Rock & Brews on
143 Main Street El Segundo, CA.

For a mere $5 drop in a bucket, guests can enjoy a luxurious, fancy, classic straight-edge razor shave with a rich, luxurious shave lather, the same type of barbershop shop shave that barbershops used to do but most can't because they can't afford those type of services, equipment, and gear.

Only the most upscale of barbershops in the most upscale neighborhoods still do those type of services.  If the average, everyday guy is mystified by the essential hygienic grooming, imagine his sticker shock at those upscale barbershops' service prices.

Again for a mere $5 per a shave and a hot towel face wrap, the average Joe at last Friday's "Shave the Date" Movember fundraiser were treated to a hundred dollar treat.

The guys were pleasantly surprised by how superior a straight-edge razor shave left their faces smoother and cleaner than their regular, daily razor blades.

Considering George from George's Barber Shop, in El Segundo, set up an impromptu barbershop in Rock & Brews' parking lot and parked right in front of the entrance,  the dudes left the fundraiser with smiles on their faces.  They also had the chance of entering a raffle contest where they can win a goody bag stuffed with Gillette Shaving stuff to him into the practice for a better shave and grooming.

This Saturday is the real opening of the one and only nail shop dedicated to Men's straight-up, no-chaser manicures and pedicures, Michael Elliot's Hammer & Nails on 8257 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles CA 90046 at http://www.hammerandnails-salon.com/

The pedicures-this scribe doesn't know but does know that back-in-the days, the fancy "Mad Men"-type upscale barbershops used to clean, trim, and cut a gent's nails with the hot towel treatment as they did to the hair.

Fast-forward to 2012, everyday clean guy, Michael Elliot and another dude were sitting in a ultra-frou frou, girly nail salon, getting their manicures for a set of straight-up, clean nails, a very basic and necessary hygiene, among girls getting bells-and-whistles embellishments.

Michael and the other guy felt very out of place and desperate.  Where can a decent guy get a decent nail place that will scrub the gunk out of his nails, from doing guy's stuff like fixing the house and car and playing sports to cleaning this nails clean enough for work and dating?

Hitting upon the epiphany that a straight-up, clean, and classic manicure, especially for men, are few and far-in-between, Michael realizes his "man"-icure shop is the spot to fill in a yawning chasm of male grooming and hygiene.

 http://www.hammerandnails-salon.com/

He named his "man"-icure salon, Hammer & Nails, a nail "shop" for guys where men can get a simple, but no less luxurious, clean set of fingernails.  Not discriminatory, Hammer & Nails is also a good place for females to get a straight-up clean set of manicures sans the ornate decoration, the frivolous nail polish, and the antsy long drying period.

Think of it as really cool and chilling nail version of an dip Jiffy Lube.  Instead of a speedy oil-change, Hammer & Nails does straight-forward manicures-what manicures used to be-where the nail technician removes the grout, cuts straight-across the nail, file and buff even while you chill in a black leather club chair, zoning out watching ESPN with headphones on.  You can even chug on a mug on the soda of your choice.

From there, the nail technician will ask you if you want a matte, clear nail polish.  Yes, you heard this scribe right-matte, clear nail polish to ensure the buff.  If you want, you can pick a nail polish from a bruisy-macho palette of black, blue, and purple.

All this under the watchful eyes of Muhammad Ali in the boxing ring, harking back to those "Mad Men" days where being masculine was being clean and groomed.

Knowing there is a big yearning for straight-up manicures for guys and no-nonsense women, Michael is open to franchising in key markets such as the Bowery/SoHo/Tri-Beca, his hometown of Philadelphia, and Atlanta...and Chicago.

Go ahead and get clean and buffed at Hammer & Nails on 8257 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles, CA 90046 and learn more at http://www.hammerandnails-salon.com/.

Moving male grooming forward during Movember.

Staying Fit & Fueled while Holiday Shopping & Party-ing, 9021pho

By Laura Medina

Vietnamese Master Chef Kimmy Tang of 9021pho, http://9021pho.com/

Okay, Halloween has officially launch its antithesis, the exuberantly yet stress-inducing Christmas Season where expectations are astronomically high from budget-busting gifting to perfect physiques subsisting on cookie & candy platters.

Oh, let's get real, no mere mortal can reach those standards, even the beautiful people of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles can't live that.  They're under even more additional stress from high society obligations from charity galas to Holiday Lighting.  What a cultari/celebunante/fashionista to do?

Well, this scribe is gonna let the cat out of the bag for the normal people, those "beautiful people" lunch, snack, and dine at this cute, petite but growing healthy chain of French Vietnamese well-done basics, 9021pho, http://9021pho.com/

Vietnamese Master Chef Kimmy Tang saw a gaping hole in the real daily, sunny life of Beverly Hills, a quick, clean, efficient gourmet restaurant that offers gourmet, yummy but fast and healthy meals that go beyond burgers, burritos, and pizza, at affordable, attainable prices.  Prices so affordable that your tween and teen can afford to eat there, by themselves,  after school... on their own allowances.  "Whew!" went the Beverly Hills parents.

Beverly Hills shoppers, shopgirls, and shopboys, and the unsuspecting tourists also find it convenient and classy, think of it as Los Angeles' version of the Brit/NY Pret A Manger.

She took her chances, a year ago, opening up her first 9021pho at the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Beverly Dr., one of Beverly Hills' shopping streets but it worked out to her latest expansion,  another shopping mecca, the Glendale Galleria at 1164 Glendale Galleria Way, Suite G019, Glendale, CA 91210.  This past Sunday, November 3rd from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m, 9021pho hosted a special food and fashion event there.

The “My Life, My Style, My Ao Dai” event featured unique designers who combined culture and traditional techniques into wearable Ao Dai couture, now growing in popularity among women around the world. Vietnamese Master Chef Kimmy Tang displayed Ao Dai, the Vietnamese national dress, an iconic symbol.  Vietnamese women use Ao Dai's as a way to make sure they stay fit and healthy.

“Traditional Vietnamese food is healthy and wholesome. “When I cook, I use minimal oils and only the freshest ingredients,” said Chef Kimmy Tang.  Every dish I create for 9021Pho is no different than what a health-conscious mother would serve her family – delicious and full of nutrients.”  In a strategic collaboration with 9021Pho, GlobALLhealth brings together the elements of Vietnamese food, health, and fashion to bring awareness to women’s health and empowerment. “We are also excited that 9021Pho is offering healthy Vietnamese food along with the venue to carry out the event for a meaningful charity,” said Quinn Tran of globALLhealth.
One of the charities benefiting from this fashion and food event is The VANGO Network, an organization that helps empower 50 youth (10 to 18-years-old) for their HIPE (Healthy Initiatives through Peer Education) activities, which allow them to educate and coach other teens on health issues. Each year, they serve close to 3,000 school children on various health topics.
If you want to eat like a Beverly Hills celebunate/socialite so you can look like one and you're not in LA, Las Vegas, or New York, you can recreate some of her yummy but healthy dishes at home.
But if you want a real holiday, do a holiday shopping trip in Beverly Hills and fuel up at
9021pho at 490 N. Beverly Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 from Fri-Sat 11am-11pm and
Sun-Thu 11am-10pm, (310) 275-5277,  http://9021pho.com/location-2/beverly-hills like the natives do.

Happy Halloween, Hollywood Style

By Laura Medina

Shenae Grimes, Jenna Ushkowitz, George Kotsiopoulos, &
Christina Milian

Sure, Hollywood may have the perks and privilege of getting the jump-start on celebrating Halloween; but they split into two parts, one public, one private with their kids.

Obviously, the Midori Halloween at the retro-hip burlesque nightclub, Bootsy Bellows, isn't for the kids.  Still, it's a great place in a great location for big kids to let down their hair, fly their freak flag, and sip yummy melon-flavored Midori Liquor for one night only.

On Tuesday, October 29th, Midori Melon Liqueur and George Kotsiopoulos, the brand's official Style Ambassador hosted the 3rd Annual Midori Green Halloween Event at Bootsy Bellows in LA, which was transformed into a galactic green empire to pay homage to Hollywood Sci-Fi style. Taking the reigns from Kim Kardashian, George was joined by Jenna Ushkowitz, Christina Milian and Shenae Grimes who made guests green with envy with their emerald green costumes.

Pantone's color of the year - Emerald always reigns in the Midori universe. Our celebrity guests brought their fashion A-game to the green carpet and accessorized with signature cocktails.

Christina Milian, who donned a tight green army body suit that showed off her toned DWTS figure and talked about Dancing with the Stars and how she can relate to Snooki who shed a few tears when she too was eliminated.  She blended in with the Midori empire in a camouflage green catsuit.

Shenae and hubby, Josh Beech, tag teamed as Batman's arch enemies - Poison Ivy and The Joker.  She played make-up artist for her hubby this Halloween and helped him perfect his "smokey eyes" for his Joker costume.  Shanae Grimes took a more authentic approach to the Poison Ivy costume - channeling Uma Thurman's emerald green spandex jumpsuit and signature red hair.

George Kotsiopoulos's makeup was flawless head to toe. His green makeup and red contacts called for a special "alien make-up artist" to perfect his chiseled cheek bones and of course his gills.

Jenna Ushkowtiz went back to the Glee archives to accessorize her Top Gun costume and used one of the army helmets from the set when Glee paid tribute to Tom Cruise classics.

Due to mass number and attendance, West Hollywood's massive Halloween Block Party gets all the attention, sometimes the wrong kind of attention.

Sure, "adult" Halloween costumes can be slutty which becomes downright predictably pedestrian.

On the contrary, the synchronized swimming troupe, the Aqualillies, proved that celebrating Halloween can be elegant.

Borrowing the sensual but intellectual "Eyes Wide Shut"motif of macabre on their free invitation, their "Masquerade" hints and leads up to a spectacular revue that the Aqualillies become famous for.

Performing derring-dos in metallic gold bathing suits and glided masquerade masks,  the women tossed and backflipped worthy of a Ziegfield Folly production in water, to a delight of a lucky, selected crowd.

An Aqualillie was kind enough to provide this scribe rare, historical footage of their Halloween performance on Vimeo, the easier, smaller scale version, http://pdl.vimeocdn.com/44690/776/201643787.mp4?token=1383326835_bceea8de6dfb52b68fde38ffe525a19c  and the larger, longer-download Vimeo version, http://pdl.vimeocdn.com/44690/776/201643787.mp4?token=1383326835_bceea8de6dfb52b68fde38ffe525a19c

If you're lucky to download both version, consider yourself lucky.  For those who caught it live, shame on you for not filming it then share this thrilling revue with the greater world.

This scribe will be an attempt to shoot the next Aqualillies production live. This scribe will make sure of this.
