Karina Smirnoff's LA Splash Cosmetics Collection, Good Enough to Sweat In.

By Laura Medina

Looking for glamourous makeup that is smudge and smear-proof, as much as she loves waterproof makeup, "Dancing with the Stars" Karina Smirnoff needs something better.

She took it to LA Splash Cosmetics.

A week ago, they launch her collection, The Karina Collection, https://shop-lasplash.com/cb-karina/the-karina-collection.html at Sofitel Hotel's Le Jardin patio but inner sanctum outdoor lounge.

The collection contained three basic items: liquid matte lipstick, Mascara Catwalk, and a fine, felt-tip liquid SLIM EYELINER Black Swan eyeliner, both in standard black.  The liquid matte lipstick comes in six different shades.

The sweaty scribe took Karina Smirnoff Liquid Lipstick in "Rendezvous" out for a spin at the slurp-happy Los Angeles Food and Wine Festival, putting it to the test.

Durable.

Let's see if it withstand a sweaty spin class.

To be continued...

MTV'S VMA 2017, Enough Said.

By Laura Medina

MTV'S/VH1'S VMAs has always been the tween to teens to early twenties demographic, the vanguards of change.

Last night's VMAs pay homage to it's history, from Madonna's "Like A Virgin" bridal gown to today's Taylor Swift's snake.

Honoring our Moonman legacy, the 2017 VMAs will give people the rare chance to witness the unexpected. Ignited by music and performance, the VMAs can change culture in a single moment.

To bring this vision to our audience ahead of this year's show, we worked with acclaimed director Floria Sigismondi (best known for directing music videos for Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, etc.) to create a campaign video reflecting iconic moments from VMA history and paying tribute to MTV's Moonman identity.

For last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Vanessa Hudgens’ hair made a slick-back but voluminous statement.

Inspiration: Chad Wood’s inspiration for the sleek and chic style was to play off the texture in Vanessa’s dress.

Step by step to recreate this look:
 1. Start with wet hair and apply John Frieda Luxurious Volume Root Booster Blow Dry Lotion
 2. Then, blow dry the hair straight and back – styling each section away from the face and helping create extra volume at the crown
 3. Next, section off the hair and starting at the nape, flat iron the hair 1” sections at a time and spray each section with John Frieda Luxurious Volume Forever Full Hairspray
·
4. To give the hair a polished wet look like Vanessa’s, apply John Frieda Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch-up Crème
5. Finally, spray John Frieda Luxurious Volume Forever Full Hairspray to lock in the style

Better Enjoy the Ripe Bounties of Summer by Firefly Studio City's Chef Perry Pollaci...Like Right Now...

By Laura Medina

There is a reason to the season.  There is a reason why fitness and food go hand-in-hand.

It's Summer, folks!

Other than it's bikini season, it's when all the organic, healthy food-fruits and vegetables-are their ripest and most plentiful.  The best of both worlds, right?

These are the food that should fuel your fitness.

Since Summer is drowning in fresh, ripe produce, chefs are doing their best in enjoying and serving and preserving the best of produce.

Studio City's Firefly's Chef Perry Pollaci is salvaging the best of Summer produce by doing them in creative, yummy ways...

As for you fitness bikini folks, don't worry about losing your hard-won bikini figure.
These are low-calorie, portion-controlled servings.  If there's protein, it's gonna be good for your collagen.  If there's antioxidant, again, good for your skin.

The first course is a salad that ought to be a dessert.  The simple burrata and peaches is a bikini salad.  Why? The bland but adaptable burrata cheese pairs very well with fruit, such as sweet, juicy peach with very little heat or cooking.  The sprinkling of crushed pistachios, only makes it more yummy.  Burrata cheese only adds to your calcium.

Fried green tomatoes with yuzu buttermilk on toast is one of multitudes to best take advantage of Summer's fresh bounties.

Lamb meatballs in ripe tomato sauce will always be a reliable classic.

phyllo-wrapped shrimp

The last and first time this scrumptious scribe first munched on this delectable phyllo-wrapped shrimp, was at a Lucky Rice Food Festival in Culver City, five years ago.  That was the first, last, and only time this scribe enjoyed this.

Until last night, thank god Chef Perry Pollaci brought back this rare treat, prawn or shrimp on a stick, wrapped in either phyllo or noodles then fried.  This was an huge hit, huge enough for two to three rounds of it.  Party-pleaser.

The protein keeps on coming, skirt steak with okinawa potato and kimchee is a refined, contemporary take on Korean-American, that's uniquely LA.

Final protein is beauty-friendly.  Every plastic surgeon's favorite protein, steelhead salmon resting on a bed of cornbread and white corn stew.  Firefly's nod to Southern cooking.

This scribe's diet tip, okay, once dessert happens, there isn't no going back.

What this scribe likes about cheesecake and doughnut hole lollipops is that they're versatile. A taste of sweet should signal the end of a meal, lunch or dinner.  The cheesecake lollipops are small enough to save your figure and easy to serve at your pool party.

The doughnut hole lollipops are also party-pleasers.

The fields are bursting with humongous watermelons that nobody knows what to do with...except for chefs and bartenders and juicers...

Firefly squeeze collagen-rich watermelon juice and lime juice then mix in tequila with a dash of agave.  It's called Drunk in Love, their take on a daiquiri.  They replaced the rum with  Californian/Mexican heritage tequila.

Summer is also strawberry season.  What to do with all these strawberries?  Shake up Strawberry Fields: champagne, vodka, lemon, housemade strawberry simple syrup.

Hurry up and get thee to Firefly, in 11720 Ventura Blvd. Studio City, CA, to enjoy Summer's bounties.  Relax in their dark, chill library lounge, they'll do the chopping and cooking for you.

Gen-X 311, Millennials' Idea of Emerging Rock Legends, Went Full-Blast for Their Upcoming "Mosaic" Tour at The Hollywood Palladium.

By Laura Medina

Gen-X ska/punk/reggae/rock band, 311, hit the ground running, blasting it at The Hollywood Palladium, this last Saturday.

This is no more tease.  This was a full-on two hour rock concert, a blasting launch for their new upcoming tour for their newest album release, MOSAIC.

Even before the concert, MOSAIC, just released on BMG--debuted at #6 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart which marks the multi-platinum group's 10th consecutive Top 10 Album on the chart.  Streams of the group's new album, MOSAIC , approached 10 million since its late June release.

In the twenty-seven years together, this Gen-X band, 311, is on it's way of becoming Millennials' own idea of their own "Rolling Stones," a classic no-fault rock n' roll band.

A wide-ranging of die-hard loyal 311 fans were hungry for 311's newest and latest releases from their brand new, MOSAIC.

The jam-packed, respectful audience swayed to their latest release, "Too Much to Think," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-8hSpJOAyo, a meditative song with their signature ska-reggae rock.  311 represents the golden of the Nineties, when everybody was open-minded to anything, as long it's good and people happy mashed-up and adaptive musical forms because it was fun and cool. You can still feel that "love" at last Saturday's 311 concert.

311 took Nineties' Gen-X angst then fuel it into positive energy that's still driving them in 2010s, in a career that last 27 year, making them rock classics.

Like the Baby Boomers' Rolling Stones, Frontman Nick Hexum said being in the band is like being in a marriage, to NPR's "All Things Considered" Lakshmi Singh ,  http://www.wnyc.org/story/311s-nick-hexum-after-3-decades-its-all-about-the-fans/

Another key to their long-term success, they found out what's new and good, adapt to it while sticking to their ska/punk rock roots.

Nick Hexum, "Really, it was just keeping an eye towards [the idea that] anything that was weird is good. Anything that is new, anything that is fresh — those are the ideas that we pursued. And also just mixing up the process: Instead of being in our own little bubble, we asked other people into the room with us to record. ... I think that's an exercise in remaining teachable and being humble — to realize that you can learn from others. And I think that's the biggest block that an artist of our age can have, is when you don't reach out, you don't keep mixing it up and bringing new people in, because your ego makes you feel like you can't accept help." http://www.wnyc.org/story/311s-nick-hexum-after-3-decades-its-all-about-the-fans/

Leading up and warming up to last Saturday's 311's Hollywood Palladium concert, fans of all ethnicities, backgrounds, and all ages, from rocking Boomers to starry-eyed Millennials to die-hard loyal Gen-Xers, they were all talking about 311's Caribbean Cruises while vaping on 311's  Grassroots Uplifter, http://www.grassrootsuplifter.com/

What makes 311 cool, starting off with their Nineties' base of mixing and incorporating  ska/reggae/punk into their unique blend of rock to evolving and adapting to their fans' taste and lifestyle into profitable side line businesses to boost their bottom line, gluing stronger to their fans, and add more years to their longevity...

"311's Nick Hexum: After 3 Decades, It's All About The Fans," "311 has its own Caribbean cruise, http://www.311cruise.com/home/  where fans can revel in a sea of fellow die-hards. It's got its own cannabis product, a vape pen aptly called the Grassroots Uplifter. And the band even has an unofficial holiday: Legions of devout followers celebrate March 11 (yes, that's 3/11) every two years by making a pilgrimage to a designated site for a special 311 concert that can go on for hours." http://www.wnyc.org/story/311s-nick-hexum-after-3-decades-its-all-about-the-fans/

The majority of the two hours consisted for 311 belting new "Mosaic" materials, which is a full blast of their upcoming concert, starting October 7th in Irvine's FivePoint Amphitheater then ending on November 4th at Tampa's Cuban Club.  Here's their full touring schedule for this Fall 2017: http://www.311.com/shows/

Since 311 has it's very own unofficial holiday, 311 will celebrate their holiday, "311 DAY 2018 with fans, in Las Vegas' Park Theater at Monte Carlo on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 of next year, March 10th to 11th, 2018.

March 11 (aka 3/11 or "311 Day") is a holiday to 311 fans everywhere.  Every other year since year 2000, 311 play an arena show on March 11 that attracts 311's biggest fans from around the world--who come together to celebrate the band, their music and the 311 community. The special show includes an extended set list and state-of-the-art production. 311 Day typically attracts over 10,000 fans from all 50 U.S. States & 15+ countries. After the past two years in New Orleans, 311 DAY 2018 returns to Las Vegas for two weekend nights at Monte Carlo's Park Theater, a brand new 5,700 capacity venue with state-of-the-art sound, lights & production.  The venue is half the size of the most recent 311 DAY arena shows making it an intimate and immersive concertexperience from any seat in the house.

Fans and new admirers can get a jumpstart by buying tickets on August 29th, with the official on-sale starting August 31 on http://www.311.com/311day2018/

Another key building block in the band's tumescence.

311 saved the best for last.  They played oldies but goodies, "Down" and "Amber," the songs that got their start way back in the mid-Nineties.

What's even cooler,  311 are currently making plans for the next video for  "'Til The City's On Fire" from MOSAIC.  In the spirit of the MOSAIC album cover, where their 12th album cover is composed of an image of the band made up of close to 10,000 photos taken with and submitted by fans, the band is calling out to their fans asking them to submit a video of themselves singing (or lip-synching) the lyrics to the song for a chance to be featured in its official video.  For all details visit: http://www.311fanvideo.com.

Paraphrasing Nick Hexum, " the cover and album title speak to the "collective nature" of 311 and "the bond between the band members and our fans."

Through the years with a growing loyal fan base, 311 kept what was best about the Nineties, going full-tilt boogie, finding out what's cool then mixing it in, and being all inclusive regardless of age, race, background, and generation, while adapting to their audience's evolving change and lifestyle and wallet.

Rock on 311!

Gunter Swoboda & Lorin Josephson are Partners in Training Men in Surfing the New Wave of Masculinity ...Making Good Men Great.

By Laura Medina

There couldn't be more whining and crying than ever before among successful, accomplished, achieving adult women, complaining about the lack of men or the lack of well-mannered, matured men.  The adult "males" out there are inconsiderate, rude...douchebags, successful-on-the surface men who know they can get better and treat well-meaning women like disposal trash.

It takes a true gentleman, a real "man's man," to stand up for and protect women.  He's  psychologist, speaker, author, mentor, coach and facilitator, Gunter Swoboda who treats and "trains" men to be better men.

Behind every man is a good wife and partner, fellow mentor, coach, and philosopher and clinician, Lorin Josephson helps and assists her husband, Gunter, making men adjust to this new masculinity, manhood, and economy.

Lorin Josephson, Gunter's wife & partner, http://www.philosophiesforliving.net/

A year and an half ago, Gunter made a soft splash in Los Angeles, discussing how men, today, aren't adjusting too well to the new economy that women are doing so well in.  He said the solution should be focusing on the men, never blaming women or victimizing women. That's not being a man.  No. He focuses on training men in "surfing" the new wave of masculinity, that benefits everyone, http://www.goodmengreat.com/blog-medium/

Among professional women, over the age of thirty, are complaining about the lack of common courtesy, Lorin pointed that the decline of manners are, one of many reasons, in making men ill-mannered and ill-suited in today's society and for ill-fated relationships and marriages.

At his end of the spectrum, Gunter said that today's "boys," the men that no woman ever wants, lacks social skills.  They weren't trained to read body language or know that "personal space" does exist and constantly break personal space without permission, enough to make women run away or issue restraining orders.  Social skills is masculine.

Lorin said that the world cannot be all-men nor can it be all-women.  We, as a society, cannot afford to be lopsided, imbalanced, one-gendered.  We both need each other to survive.  Paraphrasing Lorin, women will initiate the changes but men need to step up to carry the changes further.

Being the "man's man" that he is, Gunter commented that this eon-old lopsided, one-gendered patriarchy is has been making women meaner yet weaker and men sicker in today's 21st-century society and economy.

The "douche bags" that many a women are complaining and crying about and suffering with, is of privilege, not true power.  Privilege are perks, certainly, not power.  Boys abuse and hurt women and children.  True power comes from real men.  Men are responsible stewards of the land, traditionally, or a company in today's world, and protect, defend, care, and practice common courtesy.

He cites the hit TV show "The Games of Thrones" the reason why patriarchy is failing society.  With the men gathering all the perks, this causes women to be dependent on them.  When dependent on men, the women become dishonest and conniving.  "The Game of Thrones'" Cersei Lannister is a prime example of women using, not loving, in order to have some say.  This eon old practice has evolved into today's "mean girl" that hurts everyone, both men and women, to the point of no true friendship or partnership.  This is not "girl empowerment."  This is why back-stabbing "frenemies" and douchebags co-exist in today's society.  We all know how we feel about those "toxic people."

We all know Cersei isn't the greatest mother because her children grow up to be so rotten, people think getting rid of them, is greater for the common good.

Today, fathers who don't man up and moms who connive, give rise of unhappy children, who repeat the cycle for future generations.

Speaking of "toxic people," Gunter is not afraid to mention Hollywood in why there are way more douche bags than anywhere else but it's a growing phenomena, unfortunately.

In Lorin's lecture, Gunter's "better half," she cites what makes a Great Man. Empathy, not narcissism, is what makes a great man, a smarter man.  A great man has a noble life purpose through sweat, blood, and tears, not platitudes.  Most importantly in today's society and in Hollywood, a great man has self-confidence, independent of others' approval.  He's not rude but he doesn't play for the high school popularity contest; and he certainly doesn't sacrifice others to get ahead in that game.

If we need to more know from Gunter and Lorin, we'll learn more from his upcoming book, "Making Good Men Great."

Gunter is on a mission to make good men greater and better.
