Eva & Paris, the Best of LA Fashion Week

 By Laura Medina

Los Angeles Fashion Week Fever, the Fall 2013 Edition, must be gradually catching on.

After the demise of IMG's LA Fashion Week, a few have taken on the mantle and formed their own runway shows and fetes which are sprouting up like mushrooms.

This scribe handpicked the best of the crop for you so you can sit back and relax.

Out Magazine and Macy's ignited LA Fashion Week's Opening Party and runway show in the heart of the "Big, Blue Whale's" lobby, the Pacific Design Center, smacked dabbed in the middle of Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood.

Los Angeles' fashion luminaries as such Mikey Koffman, the impresario behind LA Fashion Weekend at the historical Sunset & Gower, and various celebrities from film, music, and the media: Lorielle New (actress); the girl group, Blush; Jai Rodriguez, Bruce Vilanch, comedy writer & "Hollywood Squares" alumni; and Paris Hilton.

The amazing thing about having Macy's as one of the backers for their fashion show with Out Magazine, is that whatever outfit you see and like, there is a pop-up shop carrying those clothes, ready for purchase.

Talk about direct to buyer.

Fred Segal hosted a tennis table match with professional players to celebrate Raf Simons for Fred Perry.
Yes, that Raf Simons who used to design for Jil Sander and now designs for Christian Dior.  His collaboration for Fred Perry...yes, that Fred Perry tennis/polo shirt...is his seventh collection for Fred Perry.  It's called "the Laurel Wreath" Collection.  He incorporate a place dart at the bust for a better fit (also makes it a better fit for girlfriends to steal since it fits the female torso so well) and interchangeable collars that you can unbotton and botton with single or double collars.  How's that for popping your collar?!

He also pump new blood into the collection with a hot leopard spot prints, oversized hounds-tooth and floral prints, and pattern blocking.

To remind people how Fred Perry shirt came to be, Fred Segal hosted an exciting and fun table tennis match with LA's top tennis table professionals so folks can watch the tennis shirts in full action, the full stretch and comfort for three hours of play.  Even Ron Robinson, the namesake himself, joined in.  Think of this as an old-fashion interactive fashion video...old fashion but a down-home classic.

"The Bachelor" Christopher Harrison teamed up with Brit/LA designer, Christopher Wicks to launch line of slim fit (this is the key word for menswear instead of "tailored"), relaxed jackets and slacks, pattered woven shirts and layering polos for "DaVinci of California by Chris Harrison."  Basically, it's Mr. Wicks' expertise and technical skills inspired by Mr. Harrison's style taste.

Another Kris had joined them for the launch...Kris Kardashian.

The high point of the social wave of LA Fashion Week was Eva Mendes for Vogue Eyewear, the hottest, the most desirable, and the most exclusive LA Fashion Week ticket in town..;and it wasn't even associated with LA Fashion Week.

Comfortably ensconced up in the Trousdale Estates of Beverly Hills, this party toasted Eve Mendes as the spokesperson for Vogue Eyewear.  It was candy-colored and candy-coated fete decorated with the line's current eyeglasses and shades where people played nighttime croquette.

Behind the scenes at Style Week LA.

Amidst the sexy chaos and the dizzy networking and camera-hogging, people tend to forget it is about the clothes, the craftsmanship, and the intricate artisanship that goes into making trend-busting clothes then changes the course of fashion.

The serious, hard-core fashionistas, the culturati, the stylistas, and the serious photographers had been gathering at St.Vibiana, one of LA's oldest Catholic church that has re-risen from the ashes as a stately marble of an arts and performance venue, fitting for a pretty serious and somber vibe currently running in this recent LA Fashion Week.

Michael Cinco's flair for the theatrical brought the house down as the finale of Style Week LA.

Whether he was influenced by ABC's "Once Upon A Time" or the two latest Cinderella movies, this 21st-century twist on medieval had Los Angelenos' jaw dropping.

The normally boisterous Angelenos were hushing down interrupters as jet-beaded, black laced ballgowns regally marched down the catwalk.  "Aaahhhs" and "ooohhhs" were the only sounds heard when Cinco's ombre-red and black hooded evening gown with the ruffle tiers marched down the catwalk.  This is what the Grammys were talking about...one can do shock value without flashing the skin.  Mr. Cinco's hooded ombre ruffle gown looked inspired by Tarsem Singh, the ground-breaking music video director and the director of "The Cell."  Shoot, even fashionistas say this collection is Alexander McQueen-sque but it is a good influence.

The judicious usage of old-fashion flesh-toned beige pantyhose nylon to give the illusion of exposed peek-a-boos and cut-outs and overlays set the classy suggestiveness.  This subtle sensuality was what Edwardian (yes, it's the "Downton Abbey" influence again) was aiming for without advanced knits.

Haute Couture need not to be impractical.  Michael Cinco's two-in-one dresses, above, hint at the allure and mystery...and the exoticism of a hoodie-turned-shawl-skirt train mini-dress.  Again, this is what the Grammys were talking about in the making of the new dress codes: exotic, alluring, and artistic, not trashy.

Michael Cinco's alluring show, Mike Vensel's intellectualism runway show, and Jen Awad's matured black velvet and white lace show reflected the maturity of the people being Style Week LA, Concept, and LA Fashion Week.  It matured out (but not away) from the industry mainstay of denim and warm weather sportswear; and the city's best designers (and textile designers) are bursting out like a black swan.  Sure, the parties still keep on running but the runway shows and the audience have grown up, gotten serious, and are demanding respect.

Something More than Beer, St. Patty's Day cocktails

By Laura Medina

Does guzzling endless rounds of beer, much less green beer, makes you want to run?

Well, you're an adult now.  Here are some St. Patrick Day's cocktails that will attract a real Irish man.

St. Patty’s Day Spruce

2 oz. Vikingfjord 80 Proof Vodka
2 Dashes of Bitter Truth Celery Bitters
Cucumber Spruce
Fever Tree Tonic Water

Instructions: Pour in two ounces of Vikingfjord vodka and top with tonic water. Add two dashes of celery bitters. Fill glass with ice. Squeeze in one lime wedge and discard. Garnish with cucumber spruce.

This is what Carrie Bradshaw would be drinking today, not taking a swig straight out of a bottle...or a can.

Lepre-tini

2 oz. Vikingfjord Apple Vodka
1.5 oz. Sour Apple Liquor
2 Teaspoons Fresh Lemon Juice.
Instructions: Add ingredients to martini glass, garnish with green apple slice.

Fashion Starts in NY then onto London then Milan...

By Laura Medina

The official Fashion Week Calendar or Marathon always start with New York.

Why? Easy, New York has always been more commercial, taking years to build itself into a capital of Ready-To-Wear which developed from "Ready to hit the Racks. Ready to the Market." to manufacturing an array of sophisticate but accessible creations that the real woman can aspire to and relate to which translate into "buy" that will eventually turn into heirloom and vintage.

From what started as an intimated, closeted setting of RTW press previews inside the designer's studio has morphed into a linear circus with a lot of flash and bang because those New York fashion designers know they're throwing their Fall Fashion Shows smack dab in the middle of Hollywood's Awards Season when those nominees, presenters, and guests are hunting for that smashing gown, that cute and hot cocktail dress, and those super-sexy eveningwear that their fans hope to emulate.  For New York designers (and brands), this syngery is direct tie-in from sketch to shopper.  Like they say, New Yorkers know their market.

In other words, New York Fashion Week has everything for everyone for every occasion.

Carlos Miele sent down a diverse collection in living, breathing vivid shades of scarlet, ultra blue, deep fuchsia and berry.

His collection of structured A-line skirts and chic trousers for the day and sleek gowns, luxurious furs, tweed coats and strong-shouldered jackets for the evening displayed that mentality.

He used white black and white linear prints, graphic patterns, stripes, and geometric laces with curvilinear silhouettes and cuts following the natural form of the body, hence the "sex appeal" emphasizing a natural woman's body, optical "nip & tuck," red carpet worthy for Hollywood.

The cute day dress suit and "ladies that lunch" dresses where only the sleeves are sheer and the skirts flare are appropriate for the New York Rising Junior Set about to take over the old guards.

Jet-setting women can see themselves wearing the fluid jumpsuits and pants topped off with a dazzling crop jacket, good for everywhere, effortless chic.

New York Fashion Week...there's everything for everyone for anytime.

Tom Ford's London Show.

Thanks to omnipotent Anna Wintour (congrats on her new leadership role of being Conde Nast's new Art Director), she jammed London Fashion Week right between New York and Milan.  Now, the fashion circuit is a non-stop go-go which makes it easier for the Yanks to debut their version of British fashion to real Brits.

St James’s is home to the famous Jermyn Street, which boasts the highest number of world renowned shirt makers on one luxury shopping street, celebrated the keystone of closets, the basic white shirt.  Popularized by "Mad Men" in America then popularized in GB by James Bond and "Downton Abbey," the shirt-makers of St. James threw "White Shirt Week" where each tailor shop displayed their take on the wardrobe stand-by.

A shirt exhibiting a three-button cuff is a trademark look of Turnbull & Asser; a ready to wear version of this shirt costs £145. Mother of Pearl buttons complement Emma Willis’ signature look for £290. Emmett’s signature shirt, at £95, is made using Baby Twill White, a weave known for its soft texture that becomes even more supple over time. In contrast, Budd’s distinctive shirt, £115, is made of white poplin two fold cotton with a classic Budd forward collar. New & Lingwood’s signature style involves a curved collar ending in a point, allowing the collar to lay properly on the upper breast bone, and costs £95. Harvie & Hudson’s iconic shirt is the plush and luxurious white Herringbone and a white ready to wear version costs £64.50. Favourbrook’s 1850’s Victorian Morning Wing Collar Dress Shirt at £90.00 has an accentuated high collar and emphasised wing lapels that create a stunning effect when paired with a silk cravat. Along with the medium weight white cotton poplin, covered buttons and French-cuffs, the straight cut tailoring creates an elegant profile. Hilditch & Key’s bestseller is the Carlton with their classic collar and double cuff, made with the finest two-fold cotton poplin and real shell buttons.

Royal Warrant holder Stephen Quin from Turnbull & Asser believes that “Every man should have at least three white shirts in their wardrobe”, with the best accessory to complement the white shirt being a silk tie.

St. James is also the hub for London Fashion Week where Tom Ford chose to throw his first runway show in almost nine years.

Against the backdrop of Lancaster House, London Fashion Week's main venue, his collection was based on a multi-ethnic embroidery theme, exploring the use of lively patterns, sequins and bright colors.

Things got really Brit when Tommy Hilfiger did his twist on British Men Tailoring where strict and structured construction is livened up with madcap checks and plaid and whimsical  prints.

Oh, let's face it.  Tommy loved hanging with the Editor of British Esquire, Alex Bilmes at London’s exclusive member’s club, The Zetter Townhouse, with London's hottest "It" Crowd: Jamie Hince, Benedict Cumberbatch, Harry Treadaway, Jeremy Piven, Ronnie Wood & Sally Humphries, Daisy Lowe, David Gandy & Sarah Ann Macklin, Victoria Pendleton, Riz Ahmed, Nick Grimshaw and Willy Moon.  One or two Rolling Stones tossed in there.

“I am delighted to be here in London to celebrate my Fall Winter 2013 Tailored collection during   London Collections: Men.  England is very close to my heart, and has always been a great source of inspiration to me with its rich heritage of tailoring. It’s an honor to be able to lend my support and celebrate the incredible talents in menswear design and I am proud to be one of several international brands who will be in the Capital to extend my support to London Collections: Men’s on a global level.” said Tommy Hilfiger.

Tommy Hilfiger's double-breasted plaid wool coat with the fur shearling trimming the collar sures comes in handy when editors rushed on over to Milan during a deary, cold European Winter...

Fratelli Rossetti's Pop Op booties, heels, and loafers fits right in with Banana Republic's "Mod for Mad Men" Collection.  The mid-'60's bold black & white graphics in swirly prints are ready to goove.

Marni's prim & proper ladylike Fall 2013 Collection reached back to the Fifties, heavily reliant on fur shrugs, wraps, trims, and skirts in a deep and somber palette, reflecting the grey Winter.  The Italians can put luxurious fabrics to good use, if not to cheer up but for ease and comfort during those long Winter days.

Based on all this globe-trotting, for a newbie, London Fashion Week (maybe, because it's fresh) has the most fun in making functional clothes look...fun and warm and wearable for many a Winters.

This scribe can see herself stealing that Tommy Hilfiger double-breasted wool plaid jacket with the fur shearling then making her own; and thank god, Tommy Hilfiger is an American Brand.

Lipstick + Lipliner= NARS' new Satin Lip Pencil

By Laura Medina

Many a fashion expert will tell you this, if you can't afford or get the dress, at least...you can get the matching lipsticks.

For those who want a fast fix, NARS just launched a new hybrid of lipstick meets lip liner in an innovative satin texture and formula that glides high-impact color on the lips with light but subtle gloss of a feel.

There's more to his Satin Lip Pencils.  They're rich in skin-pampering Vitamin E and Hyaluronic Acid as they are in pigment and opaque glaze.

Rose-Gold is the sleeper color underneath the Color of the Year, Emerald (more on this later as St. Paddy's Day approaches).

NARS' current Spring Collection is rich on rose-gold, very wearable pink flush with the soft flash of gold to push the rose shade forward.

Here's the list and the video in how to get this fierce feminine look...

COMPLEXION/FACE

  • Prepare the skin with the Pore Refining Primer to create a smooth canvas for beautiful makeup application.
  • Create an even, luminous soft-matte complexion with Sheer Matte Foundation (Stella is wearing shade Siberia). Warm the foundation in the palm of the hand and apply with fingers to the center of the face, blending outward.
  • Get a velvety luminous glow by highlighting the complexion with Luxor Multiple. Blend with fingers into the hollow of cheeks and outward towards the temples.
  • Subtly define the cheeks with Seduction blush by sweeping the Yachiyo Brush upward and outward along cheeks.
  • Set the look by sweeping Light Reflecting Setting Powder all over the face with the Loose Powder Brush for a luminous soft matte finish.

EYES

  • Prepare the eyelid with Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base. Begin by applying with the applicator then smooth with finger to a fresh finish.
  • Using the Eyeshadow Brush, sweep Abyssinia Single Eyeshadow all over the eyelid and the bridge of the eye.
  • Create depth and dimension by applying the bright pink shade of Bouthan Duo Eyeshadow into the crease of the eye with an Eye Contour Brush.
  • Use the Large Dome Eye Brush to sweep Himalayas Single Eyeshadow across the lid, along lower lashline and corner of the eye.
  • Define the eye with Carpates Eyeliner Stylo using the side of the tip to draw as close to the lashline as possible.
  • Finish with two coats of Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara— move brush side to side for smooth, separated lashes.
 LIPS
  • Line and fill lips with Yu Satin Lip Pencil for a bold, statement making lip.
You can watch supermodel and NARS' current Spring Collection 2013 spokemodel, Stella Tennant go all wild at during the campaign shoot at  http://youtu.be/A4jSfHzQMQA .

If it's eye candy to go with your lip candy, watch this artsy but very New York interactive video, on the NARS' site, of two very influential stylistas, makeup artist Catherine Baba and musician, Sarah Ruba, real women, real influentials apply and wear all the shades of the Satin Lip Pencil at the  Satin Lip Pencial Interactive Video/Film....http://www.narscosmetics.com/satin-lip-pencil-interactive-film/satin-lip-pencil-interactive-film/default.aspx?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=US&utm_campaign=satin_lip_video_031213&hq_e=el&hq_m=1701854&hq_l=9&hq_v=a9b1de07bc.

Actresses being toasted, wine and dine during Awards Season are so lucky to be the very first ones to try the new products before us mere mortals.

Here's Rose Byrne, being one of the first, to wear Satin Lip Pencil in Luxembourg Satin Lip Pencil (available in the US: March 15, 2013).

The kind folks at NARS were kind enough to give this final wrap-up for London Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week ...
